My friend’s car has a neat fancy digital readout in the center of her speedometer. I asked her about it, and she said it tracks gas mileage. It even jumps up and down while driving based upon your habits, encouraging safe, efficient speed and acceleration.
In what ways can we use this practice to influence human behavior? What if we made gas mileage visible and prominent on the outside of the vehicle? Could we make gas mileage a status symbol and change buying patterns, effectively creating a greener economy?
It’s amazing how malleable human behavior is: adding achievement points to videogames and social objectives to online media has completely changed the landscape in those industries. What else could we make visible to alter consumer habits? Or what should we hide?
